So this is awkward...I'm not sure if I actually posted about this earlier but... guess what?? I got a Bridging Boarders Buddy. So Bridging Boarders is a program in my school where students can pair up with an ELL (English Language Learner) student.
I figured this could a) be a good use of time and b) useful for EARSL. This program will help me learn how to speak more clearly so a non-native speaker could understand; explain challenging topics in simpler ways; and just get along with and work with people. I had a buddy. She was from Rwanda and she was really nice! We would meet after school and just do her homework together. We even made plans to make cookies. Sadly, no cookies were made because she wordlessly left for a different high school. Apparently she had moved :(. The morning I came to find her gone the ELL teacher looked around the room and pointed to a girl and said ,"you can be her buddy!" Not I have a new buddy, her name is Priscilla and she's from the Ivory Coast! How cool is that? Anyway, I just thought the benefits I get from this club could really translate well into my work in EARSL. In addition, the teacher let me use an old textbook they had to make my curriculum. People can be so nice.

Well here I am. I'm on a bus evacuating school! Guess why? Bomb threat. It seems bad but this is kind of the most exciting that has ever happened at my school.
Anyway... As you can guess from the title I have been inspired! I have just thought of the way to save time when I teach. Now I don't know if I have mentioned them before but when I teach I teach on a singular long, thin white board. If I write something for one class I have to erase it for the next and rewrite everything the next day. Solution: GIANT POST IT NOTES. I plan to write out all my teaching material and all the notes the students will take on giant note sheets. Then I can just take them there and hang them up and whenever I need them. Example: Body parts vocab -- I can draw out a body and label the parts in English and I can use it when I'm teaching vocab to younger student and Doctor-Patient role play to older students! It will ensure accuracy because I don't have to draw out the diagram on the fly. It will ensure speed because I save time on erasing and drawing - I will have to do neither! I have been a longtime lover of Wix websites but it seems today that I will need to move to greener pastures (i.e. website hosts). With Wix I can post from my phone!! Which is what I am doing :).
So other big things include: A) I got cats. Yep two cats. They are amazing little fuzz balls B) My father just made a trip to Sri Lanka and brought me back Milo, glitter pens, and some English workbooks. Now I asked for grades 6-11. I got grade 4 and 6. It's ok - my mother is going back this week so I will be sure to get what I need - hopefully my mother can recognize numbers better (weird because my dad is an economist). The two big events: |
AuthorHi! I'm Samalya. When I'm not running about cramming for school I sit on my laptop and (attempt to) make a curriculum to improve spoken English in rural Sri Lanka! Categories
